Horizon Sailing School offers an exclusive pathway for experienced sailors to become certified ASA instructors—right here in the British Virgin Islands. As one of the only schools in the BVI with an in-house Master Instructor, we provide unparalleled guidance, mentorship, and hands-on experience throughout your training.

Our Instructor Qualification Clinics (IQCs) are designed to develop your teaching, leadership, and seamanship skills, preparing you to instruct others with confidence. You’ll work closely with our Master Instructor, observing, coaching, and practicing teaching techniques in real-world sailing conditions aboard Horizon yachts.

Training takes place entirely in the stunning BVI waters, providing a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment for learning how to teach sailing professionally. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to certify new ASA sailors anywhere in the world—armed with experience, knowledge, and the Horizon standard of excellence.

On the Learn to Instruct Syllabus

Under the guidance of your Master Instructor, you can work through your ASA 201, 203, 204, 214, 218 Instructor Certification Standards

Prerequisites:

  • Basic Keelboat Sailing (ASA 101)
  • Minimum of 18 years of age

Becoming an American Sailing instructor is the best way to spread your enjoyment of sailing and requires advanced knowledge of all levels of theory and practical skills. It is not a requirement to complete all the instructor courses in 1 week; you can break them up as much as you like. Each course is a prerequisite for the next one.

Although it is not a requirement, the majority of instructor candidates also have a Captain's licence or many years experience sailing. A successful candidate will be able to single-hand yachts up to 50ft, with students onboard. It is important that you are safe and comfortable being onboard with people who have never been on boats before, as they will be looking to you for guidance.

Learn On: 

  • Monohull (ASA 201, 203, 204, 218)
  • Catamaran (ASA 214)

Minimum Time: 

  • ASA 201: 2 days
  • ASA 203: 1 day
  • ASA 204: 1 day
  • ASA 214: 1 day
  • ASA 218: 1 day


What does it give me?
Your American Sailing Instructor credentials 201, 203, 204, 214, 218.

What does that let me do?
The ability to teach students and certify them for American Sailing.

What do I need to do it?
You need your ASA 101 certificate of competence plus experience to captain yachts up to 50ft and be at least 18 years old.

How many days do I need?
You’ll need 6 days to complete all your courses.

Which boats can I learn on?
ASA 201, 203, 204 and 218 should be taken on a monohull. ASA 214 should be taken on a catamaran.
